Breast Enlargement - Is it for You?

With our society focusing so much on the perfect female form, there is a lot of pressure for women to live up to those images; for many women, this includes plastic surgery.

The most common cosmetic procedure is breast enlargement. There are as many reasons to get cosmetic surgery as there are women seeking breast augmentation. Like any operation, there are many benefits and risks you need to consider.

To make the best decision for your health, you need to know as much as you can about the process.

It is important to remember that your breast surgery is for and about you. Whether you feel that your breasts are too small, uneven or you simply want a more voluptuous figure, breast enlargement has never been safer. These days, there are numerous qualified and experienced plastic surgeons performing augmentations. Techniques and the safety of the implants themselves have improved.

When you consider enlargement procedures, there are several things that can determine the success of the operation. Your health, both mental and physical, can have an effect on the outcome of your procedure. You should always consult a plastic surgeon before making a final decision.

During the consultation, you will be able to ask any questions you have and better understand the procedure.

Once you have talked the plastic surgeon, you will need to make some choices about the type of implants you want, where you want them placed and the best surgical procedure to meet your enlargement goals.

Breast implants have undergone much improvement over the years, including safety and health tests that were investigated by the FDA. As a result, doctors in the United States can offer you a saline (saltwater solution) filled implant or a silicone solution filled implant. Your implants can be placed beneath the muscle or on top of it. To perform the procedure, doctors have mastered several methods of cutting your breast.

When you consider enlargement surgery, think about where the stitches and scars will be. As with most operations, there will be some scaring. In current augmentation procedures, though, surgeons offer three types of incisions in locations where your scars are not usually highly visible.

In the inframammary method, the cut is made under your breast where the skin naturally folds.

The periareola or key hole method cuts around your areola and down towards your chest.

In the axillary procedure, the cut is placed under your arm. Each location of the incision is usually concealed by natural folding of your skin, so once the stitches are removed and healing takes place, the scars are hardly noticeable and in some cases, invisible.

Apart from the surgery, the healing period is the most important period of your operation. You should follow your doctor's directions to make certain you heal properly and avoid complications such as tearing your stitches or infection of the cut site.

Taking care of yourself during recovery can reduce the chances of some risks. Other risks, however, are simply due to the way your body heals. Those risks include changes in nipple sensation, limited or no ability to nurse, wrinkling (particularly with the saline implants) and pain at the operation site.

In some cases you may experience all or none of these results and they may be short term or long term. Your best option is to consult your cosmetic surgeon if any of these side effects concern you.

Your surgery should successfully meet the goals that you and your doctor have discussed prior to surgery.

Many women choose to have enlargement surgery because for them, and perhaps for you, the benefits greatly outweigh the risks. If you desire a more even appearance, a more voluptuous figure or a more attractive bust line, then enlargement surgery is a practical option to achieve the figure you desire.
